  • Announcement

We are having our first ever ZOOM meeting on Thursday October 28 at 7PM open to all driving school owners. We will have a representative from MVC at the meeting. Our treasurer Laura Videtti is managing the technical aspects of the meeting. You will need to email her your intention to attend and she will send you the meeting ID and password. Her email is LVidetti@princetondrivingschool.org Please also send her a question you would like answered by MVC. It is our plan to present as many of these questions as time allows.

Let’s show MVC how large our voices are with all of us attending what I hope will be an informative meeting from the comfort of your home.

  • New awareness of Current Regulation

Just a reminder that you should be aware that according to New Jersey Administrative Code 13:23-3.1 effective December 6, 2004:

    (a) Neither a driving school instructor nor a student shall use any interactive wireless communication device in a driving school vehicle that is being operated on a public road or highway for purposes of behind-the-wheel driving instruction. For purposes of this section, "use" shall include, but not be limited to, talking or listening on any interactive wireless communication device or operating its keys, buttons, or other controls.

    (b) The prohibition contained in (a) above shall not apply in an emergency situation

There are some schools who are either unaware of this regulation or choose to ignore it. Please act professionally. This is about safety!

NOTIFICATION REGARDING THE USE OF BACKUP CAMERAS AND PARKING SENSORS DURING THE ROAD TEST

Effective immediately, road test applicants may use vehicles equipped with backup cameras and parking sensors, in accordance with Assembly Bill No. 2789, which was signed into law on August 31, 2016. Excerpts from the law, outlining the changes, are:

“During the road test, an applicant may use a rear visibility system, parking sensors, or other technology installed on the motor vehicle that enables the applicant to view areas directly behind the vehicle or alerts the applicant of obstacles while parking.”

“Parking sensors’ means proximity sensors which use either electromagnetic or ultrasonic technology and are designed to alert the driver to obstacles while parking. ‘Rear visibility system’ means devices or components installed on a motor vehicle at the time of manufacture that allow a forward facing driver to view a visual image of the area directly behind the vehicle.”

Although this new technology will be permitted, the Motor Vehicle Commission is committed to examining an applicant's ability to demonstrate ordinary and reasonable control while operating a motor vehicle. It is important to remember that technology has the potential to malfunction. As such, drivers should still utilize their rear and side mirrors, be aware of the area surrounding the vehicle, and not rely solely on the technological assistance.

Please take note that this change does not appear in the driver manual as the newest version was printed before this law took effect.
